Presentation at DG Comp

Dr. Gregory K. Leonard delivered a presentation entitled “Reflections on Natural Experiments” at the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.

Dr. Leonard discussed the history of experimental approaches in statistics and econometrics and the prominent position such approaches hold in the field of economics today. He then described potential pitfalls with natural experiments, focusing on applications to antitrust. Dr. Leonard concluded that, while natural experiments can provide valuable information in an antitrust inquiry, they do not relieve an economist of the need to think about the underlying structural economics.
